By: Heather @ 3:11 pm

The Challenges of Moving

Even under the best of circumstances, moving is a time-consuming challenge. The sheer number of steps in the moving process can prove overwhelming, which is rather problematic when even a small misstep can lead to serious consequences. Never mind the potential for catastrophe when the movers have neither the expertise nor the experience needed to handle the items entrusted to them.

The Need for Safe and Reliable Movers

Barring all but a small number of special cases, people moving out of their homes need movers to lend them a helping hand. This is because movers are the ones with the resources needed to move even the most challenging items in a safe and reliable manner. For example, most people cannot move appliances or heavy pieces of furniture without risking serious harm, much less secure them while moving them to their new homes. In contrast, movers have the tools needed to move even the heaviest pianos in a manner that minimizes the chances of a problem coming up. (more…)

Moving to Ottawa: Here’s How to Make the Move Easier

By: Heather @ 3:40 pm

Moving homes can be an extremely stressful and difficult time. It requires a lot of careful planning, as well as ensuring that everybody and everything is in the right place at the right time. Whether you are moving to Ottawa, or to anywhere else in the country, below are some tips that you can follow in order to help make the move as trouble-free and stress-free as possible.

Packing Items

The boxes, cartons, and other packing items that you use during the move need to be purchased well in advance, and no matter how many boxes you buy, you will almost never have enough. Buy labels too, so that you can easily identify what is in each of the cartons when you arrive.

Packing the First Items

Once you have the boxes and other items ready, start packing as soon as possible. Clear out any junk rooms, basements, and attics, and pack these items first, getting rid of any items that won’t be making the move with you. Give away good quality items to charity, and consider selling some of the very best. Throw away anything you won’t use; treat your move like a new beginning, especially if you are downsizing to a smaller apartment or house.

Items found in the attic and basement are likely to be those that you use least, and this means that packing them first shouldn’t cause any frantic box opening to find essential paperwork, before you start moving to Ottawa. You can pack the items in your living and other main rooms closer to the date, but don’t leave it too late.

Using a Professional Moving Company

Ensure that you use a professional moving company, as they will be able to help ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible when moving to Ottawa. They will be able to look at all the items that need moving, and help you to choose the most appropriate types of packing carton, and ensure that you buy enough of them. In some cases, they will be able to put you in touch with companies that sell all the items that you require. As well, Westmount Moving knows the Ottawa-Gatineau area extremely well, meaning your items will be delivered safe, secure and on time!

Packing the Last Items

Items such as personal paperwork, jewellery, and any small fragile items with sentimental value, should be packed last, and you should ideally move these to your new property yourself. On the day that you are moving to Ottawa there will be items that you need to pack in an overnight bag, including a suitcase of clothes, toiletries, and other important personal items that may be used during your first night’s stay at your new destination.

Letting People Know You’re Moving to Ottawa

Ensure that you let everybody know that you are moving to Ottawa in plenty of time. This includes utility companies, schools, and any other important personal and business contacts. If you leave it to the last minute, you may find yourself stressed and pressed for time to tie up all loose ends before you move!

Moving To Ottawa

Moving to Ottawa is a major step in life, and any moving day can be stressful and difficult. However, using a professional moving company like Westmount Moving can help ensure that you have help from the planning right through to the unpacking stage. Using professionals will remove a lot of the stress, and have you settled in your new home before you know it.

Ottawa Celebrity Sports Dinner

By: Heather @ 2:31 pm

We might be a moving and warehousing company, but we also LOVE our sports. Whether it is moving teams (Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and the Kitchener Rangers), sponsoring them (Ottawa Soccer Club, Team Canada in the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship) or even participating in major sporting events ourselves (Westmount Moving Hockey Team VS the Mighty Yuks, benefiting the Montreal Children’s hospital, Tour de Force, Tinman Triathlon, as well as various golf tournaments) we love sports and everything surrounding them. While Westmount Moving and Warehousing has three main offices; Montreal, Ottawa and Kitchener-Waterloo, the company first grew out of Montreal.

As Joe Gagnon, our president said in an interview last spring, “Montreal is a sport town.” This love for sports has carried itself throughout all three offices during our companies growth and with that, our love for sharing sport related news! How about the 16th Annual Ottawa Celebrity Sports Dinner? If you haven’t heard of this event before, on Monday, October 21st 2013 at the Ottawa Conference and Event center, the MLB’s all-time hits leader, the former player for the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and the former manager of the Montreal Expos and Reds: Pete Rose, will be the guest of honour at this fabulous event:

“Rose has won three World Series Rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award and made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequalled five different positions.”

The Ottawa Celebrity Sports Dinner is organized each year to bring together elite members of Ottawa’s business community to raise money for local charities. This year, the Ottawa Celebrity Sports Dinner fundraiser is supporting the Soloway Jewish Community Centre as well as The Ottawa Food Bank. ‘Swabbing Parties’: New-age trend to find a match

By: Heather @ 7:45 pm

Normally when one visits a bar, they last thing they expect is to be cotton swabbed upon entrance. However, if it can help save someone’s life, swab away! Welcome to a Swabbing Party or ‘Swab-a-thon’. Confused? Read below.

Welcome to a Swabbing Party or 'Swab-a-thon'. Chris Taylor is the general manager at Grace O’Malley’s bar in Ottawa. Chris was recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and was told he needed bone marrow transplant. Un-able to find a match that could give him a chance to be cured, his boss who owns other bars in the Ottawa and Toronto area organized something called a ‘Swab-a-thon’ for Chris.

Basically, every person who visits the indicated bars during the swab-a-thon dates with have their mouths swab in order to potentially track down a stem cell match that could be donated. With a large turn-out and a simple cheek swab, Chris has an 80% chance of finding a match and 50% chance of being cured. Chris is taking it day by day and is hopeful, although he does suffer intense muscle pain and nausea because of the illness.

He is currently going through the chemo process and thinking positively. He is thankful for the support he has behind him and encourages others to the same for their friends or family that are suffering from an illness where a simple swab and can be the cure.

Home Safety Tips

By: Heather @ 2:21 pm

We help you move into a home. We go through the process with you from the beginning to the end. Therefore, the last thing we want is for your new space that we helped you move into, get burglarized or destroyed in some way. With Ottawa police issuing a warning to keep doors and windows locked after two women were woken up by a strange man in their bedrooms in Sandy Hill early Sunday morning, we think it’s time to re-think some safety measures. Coming straight from the Toronto police, are some valuable tips to keep your castle safe from invaders:

  1. Keep your doors and windows closed
  2. Leave some lights on at night and keep noise on when you’re away
  3. It doesn’t pay to advertise: Answering machines that tell strangers you’re going to be away for a week will not help you.
  4. Stow the usual suspects: Hide your valuables
  5. Stow your car
  6. Keep an eye out: If you see something suspicious, trust your gut
  7. If your house has been broken into: Don’t go in, call the police and don’t touch anything. Once police have arrived, take lots of photos.
  8. Ask to see company I.D. or a badge if someone knocks at your door
  9. Have more than one phone line
  10. Install an alarm
  11. Check your locks often
  12. Take a walk around your house to spot any weakness or area a burglar might use
  13. Change your routine: Burglar’s often stalk homeowners to learn their routine, change yours up to keep them off their game.

As you know, at Westmount Moving and Warehousing, we strive to provide a first class moving experience for our customers on each and every move. Lucky for you, this week’s topic is something you are probably all familiar with: APPS!

Yes, these apps are the top apps to download onto your iPhone, Smartphone, Android, Windows phone or whatever gadget you might have! Enjoy

1) Moving List: Gives you a timeline for buying boxes, renting a truck and even pre-populates your list with typical moving tasks.

2) Moving Van: This app lets you track what’s in your boxes. Assign each one a name or number, take photos of the boxes you pack and track your possessions.

3) Stanley Bostitch Level: This app came in super handy while decorating my new apartment. It is insanely accurate and easy to calibrate

4) Frame Up: Frame Up is an iPad-only app, but the concept is simply ingenious! After taking a picture of their wall, users are able to use Frame Up to plan a wall art/photo arrangement. Remember, it’s always best to test first before taking hammers or any tools to the home.

5) Sun Seeker: 3D Augmented Reality Viewer: Determining lighting/light sources is as important as choosing a paint color when it comes to decorating an interior. Sun Seeker is an amazing tool for photographers, botanists, and home owners too, providing information about where exactly the sun will be shining from with the aid of augmented reality.

6) Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap: Sherwin-Williams’ ColorSnap is a handsomely produced app supporting the popular paint brand’s massive catalogue of colors. Browse through over 1,500 shades, or use color from a photo and get the perfect tone, and save physical space by saving all possibilities in the ColorSnap app rather than a swatch file. When you’ve decided on a color, simply save the mixture code for a trip to the hardware store.

7) BuildApp Pro: Creating a room layout for optimal position of furniture before the heavy lifting is always a good idea, both for sanity and your muscles’ sake. BuildApp Pro makes it easier for couples to communicate an ideal layout by creating a virtual 3D model of the apartment space and placing replica furniture.

8) Inventory: Another opportunity offered during the process of moving into a new home is unpacking each individual item. This is the chance to finally log and gain a better understanding of how much and learning exactly what we own. Inventory acts as a handheld scanner and photo database (with built-in camera feature), offering a user particular fields to fill in details such as room, location, and volume for itemizing, an especially helpful tool for home insurance preparation.

9) Jack of Tools Pro: Jack of Tools is a digital toolbox of home improvement tools. For setting up shelves, use the level tool is handy for straightening. The flashlight is handy for low light situations, while the magnifying tool is great for inspecting details, and the sound meter can determine the threshold of ‘how loud is too loud?’ indoors.

10) WigWag: Home automation and monitoring has taken off thanks to smart phones and compatible devices, combining an assortment of features once limited to expensive custom installed systems. And after moving, without furniture in the way, it can be the perfect opportunity to setup an automation system like WigWag, which allows homeowners to check temperature, turn on/off lights, and even schedule when the front door can be unlocked, with an open source system compatible with an assortment of home automation products already on the market.
